The Hobonichi Graph Notebook “Yamazakura” features a cover design created in collaboration with botanical illustrations by Tomitaro Makino, the Japanese botanist known for his detailed studies and illustrations of plants.

The cover reproduces Makino’s detailed illustration of Yamazakura, or Japanese mountain cherry, from the first volume of Dai-Nihon Shokubutsushi, published in 1900. The botanical plate is characterized by exceptionally fine lines and precise details, reflecting Makino’s careful observation of the plant.

The illustration shows the overall form of the Yamazakura branch along with detailed views of its flowers and various structures. Makino used a traditional maki-e brush made from bundled mouse hair and added delicate shading to convey the dimensional quality of the living petals.

Inside, the notebook uses lightweight and durable Tomoe River paper and opens flat to 180 degrees. The pages feature a 3.7 mm grid, matching the format used in the Hobonichi Techo Original.

The grid color changes every 60 pages in A6 and every 72 pages in A5, following a red, blue, green, and purple sequence. This makes it convenient to separate different subjects within one notebook and find notes later.

Both sizes correspond to Hobonichi Techo Original and Cousin dimensions, allowing the notebook to be used with compatible Hobonichi covers. It can be used as a planner companion, a dedicated notebook for different subjects, or an everyday writing journal.
