The artwork depicts Koshinso, a perennial carnivorous plant native to moist rocks in mountainous areas of northern Kanto, Japan. The plant was named after Mount Koshin in Tochigi Prefecture, where it was discovered.
Originally drawn by Makino in 1901, the botanical illustration captures the delicate plant in ink and watercolor. Its pale purple flowers are shown growing sideways, with slender flower stalks extending outward and gently curving upward. Unlike many of Makino's botanical drawings, this particular illustration features a distinctive black background.
